I turned my handwriting into a font, and it was SO easy!
Have you ever wondered how people create all of those amazing fonts that you can find and download?
Apart from their being basically art geniuses (how does someone get a hand that steady?!), I always thought the creators must have had been some secret computer hackers to be able to transfer their art to type.
Then I found this post, and my brain had a little party. Um, so there is a tool that I can use that will take MY chicken scratch, put it on my laptop, and let me make stuff? Without my having a degree in font-ology? 😉 And it’s FREE?!
That would be YES! Before I could dream about becoming a world-famous font star I had to remember my handwriting is something like a twelve-year-old boy’s. 😉 But regardless of how pretty or NOT pretty it turned out, how fun would it be to be able to say I made my own font?!
Well I gave it a try, it WORKED, and now I can write things in my own lettering whenever I want! Woohoo! And because this kind of thing is SO cool and SO handy, I had to share it with you too.
So, may I present…
The Easy Way to Turn Your Handwriting into a Font
You will need a black felt-tipped pen (or use a thinner pen at your own risk), and access to a printer and scanner.
Creating the Font…
Step 1: Start by going to MyScriptFont.com…
Step 2: Under “Fill out the template,” click on “PDF” to view a page that looks like this, and print!
Step 3: Begin filling in your letters.
Quick tip: MAKE SURE to keep your strokes inside the inner gray boxes so your letters won’t be cut off. I may or may not have gone through 3 copies before I realized what I was doing wrong! 🙂
Step 4: Once you have completed the upper section and as much of the lower section as you will be using, scan to your computer.
(Exactly how your printer/scanner works may vary, but I was able to scan directly to my Mac. I used Black and White, 300 DPI, and JPEG as my settings.)
Step 5: Back at MyScriptFont.com, click on Choose File under “Upload the scanned template.” While your font is uploading, give it a name! 🙂
Step 6: On the Result page, click the link below your image to download your beautiful font!
Installing the Font… (it’s super quick and easy!)
Step 1: Go to the Downloads folder and double click on your newly saved file. A new window will pop up… (Mine looks like this on my Mac:)
Preview all your letters! Yay!
Step 2: Click the “Install Font” button.
TA-DA! Your font should be SAVED in your computer’s font directory. I went to my Font Book and there was my handwriting in all of its scratch-scratch glory… 🙂
See? For all of its crooked letters, skips, quirks and flaws, I love my font. Not because it’s perfect, but because it’s mine and that’s just pretty cool. 🙂
So now that your new font is installed, time to wow the world with your gorgeousness! 😉 Write letters to your friends, or leave fun notes around the house… add cute hand lettered captions to your photos, print out your favorite quotes…oh, the possibilities!
What will you be writing?
