I am so excited about this project I get to share with you today! Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last couple of years, you’ve heard of the hugely popular decorating show Fixer Upper…and yes, like millions of others I am head over heels with Joanna’s style. 😉 Industrial-chic-meets-rustic-charm? Sign. Me. Up. Fixer-Upper-prices-meets-college-girl-budget? Ummm….
Apparently I have really good (ahem, expensive) taste, because when I hopped on Google to find big metal letters like the ones Joanna uses like…everywhere, I found out that buying a word’s worth would basically cost me an arm and a leg and a small Russian village. Yikes!
So I was floored when several weeks ago I got to ‘meet’ an amazing lady named Lynda. Fellow fan of Fixer-Upper (we met in a decorating group! 😉 ), ridiculously resourceful, and she literally drew her own shiplap wall. Yeah, basically DIY Superwoman…and guess what? She made her own DIY faux metal letters. A whole wall of them.
I would never have guessed this beautiful ampersand wasn’t real weathered metal. She MADE it – and for just pennies.
A few giddy messages (me) and some awesome photos (her) later, I feel incredibly lucky that Lynda is spilling all her secrets with us on the blog today! Or at least sharing this one. 😉 She filmed her first ever video tutorial, and I am beyond excited to be featuring it on Creating Lovely.
I can’t wait for you to see her photos and watch the full video tutorial, so that YOU can make your own 3D letters! ENJOY! 🙂
How to Make Weathered “Metal” 3D Letters Out of Poster-board | VIDEO TUTORIAL
Hi, I’m Lynda! I’m just a gal who loves the look of rustic decor things, but doesn’t like the cost to purchase them. 😉 I enjoy trying to come up with ways to create the look for a minimal cost. I’m so excited to be sharing with you how I made weathered metal-looking letters for just pennies!
You will need:
- Large sheet(s) of poster-board
- Scissors/utility knife
- Hot glue gun
- Metallic silver spray paint
- Upholstery tacks
For the “rust”:
- Rust-colored acrylic paint (like this one)
- Small paintbrush

I hope you guys enjoyed, and are inspired to take on your own fabulous DIY project! Lynda, thank you SO much! 🙂
