Everything’s horrible. I just want to go stuff my face with cake.
You know those days when you’re just feeling blah? Those days where you don’t hate your life, and you’re not even sure why you’re not happy…all you know is that you might cry, or maybe go punch something.
This is for the girl who is sad.
(((Huge virtual hug)))) The first step to feeling better? Figuring out why. Here are ten reasons you might be feeling a little “out-of-sorts.”
1. You’re mad at yourself.
I didn’t get enough done. I was on my phone when I could have been doing _____. I ate too much and I’m a horrible person.
I GET IT. We’ve all been there. Yes, maybe you could have done things a little bit differently, but you didn’t and the world is still standing. GIVE YOURSELF GRACE. Tomorrow is a new day, thank God for second chances and begin again. (P.S. – you won’t really gain 5 pounds)
2. Your body is unhappy.
You know the “mind/body connection?” This one is HUGE! When the human body is depressed (i.e. sick/tired/in pain) the brain can be too! Whether you’re in bed with the flu or just feeling a little “iffy,” your mind knows when something is “off.” Take a few minutes to evaluate how your body is really feeling, and don’t underestimate the impact of smaller things like seasonal allergies or minor stomach troubles.
3. You’ve been staring at a screen all day.
Few things are worse than realizing you’ve spent 8 out of the last 10 hours scrolling on your phone, binging Netflix, and getting lost on Pinterest. (Ask me how I know. 😉 ) If this is true, try hitting the big X on your browser and go live for a while.
4. You’ve been spending time with the wrong people.
You know that person who does nothing but grouch about her family, complain about the weather, and snap at anything that moves? If you’re spending extensive amounts of time with negative people you’re going to start feeling bad about your life and everything in it. Make an effort to spend more time with people who are cheerful and positive, and you’ll notice that you’re soon feeling happier and more upbeat yourself!
5. Your pajamas are still on.
Don’t kill me for this one! 😉 A rare PJ day is fun for everyone, but if it’s 3PM and you’re still wearing what you wore to bed last night, you could be feeling a little sluggish and despondent. You probably haven’t had a very productive day so far, and that’s depressing! A quick shower and some fresh clothes may be all you need to start your day brand new.
6.It’s after dark.
If the sun went to bed a long time ago, you should too. Sadness loves the shadows, and it will all be better in the morning, trust me.
7. You’re listening to #ALLTHEEMOTIONS.
What’s playing? That tear-jerking song may feel good at first, but if you’re listening to a depressing playlist, you’re going to be depressed. If the tune and lyrics are sad, angry, or even just confusing, you’re better off pressing delete. Turn on something uplifting and you’ll be feeling more optimistic in no time!
8. You haven’t had any chocolate lately.
Yup, this one’s legitimate and it’s okay to hug me. 😉 (While you’re reaching for a Hershey’s, of course) You already know chocolate tastes amazing, but did you know that cocoa boosts serotonin levels, which improve your mood? The darker the chocolate, the more benefits you receive (and the healthier it is for you) – so go for the good stuff! 😉
9. You haven’t been outside.
Vitamin D. Fresh air. Bird songs. God didn’t create humans to be hothouse plants, and it’s amazing how being out in His world will clear your mind and help to freshen your spirits. If you’re the kind of girl who looks out the window to check the weather, try stepping outside to enjoy some sunshine!
10. There’s a legitimate problem bothering you.
So maybe it’s not your phone, it’s not your music or your sniffles, and there really is something chocolate can’t fix (tell me when you find it! 😉 ). Is there a step that you can take to help your situation? Do it, even if it’s small. But if you honestly don’t know what’s what? Spend time on your knees in prayer. Talk to someone. And believe me when I say that it’s all going to be okay.
See it’s like this…
No matter why you’re feeling the way you do, feeling sad and down doesn’t make you a bad person. It’s okay to feel like not everything is okay.
But never forget that no matter how bad you feel right now, it’s not going to be this way forever. Something beautiful is coming. Every time the sun sets, it comes back up. Every time a leaf falls, a new leaf opens.
And it could just be that your something special is waiting just over the horizon.
Hang in there, girl.
